A CELEBRATION of colours has opened at the Platform One Gallery in Todmorden with an exhibition of paintings by Jean McKay.
Jean is a self-taught artist who was born in Stockport and now lives in Mytholmroyd. She was a member of Salford Art Club for many years before moving to Cornwall in 1985. She spent 20 years working and painting in Cornwall and held a number of succe
ssful one-woman exhibitions.
Although she specialises in water colours, she has also sold many oil paintings and silk paintings. Silk paintings are usually poppies, painted on silk with silk paints. During her latter years of living in Cornwall she spent most of her time teaching, usually on a one-to-one basis or with groups of local people.
She moved to Dale View, Mytholmroyd in February 2007 to be nearer to her family but also to paint the scenery of the area. The variety of moorland, rivers and woodland is a continuing source of wonder to her.
Jean says: "Most of my work is done outside and I very rarely paint anything dull. I enjoy painting on silk but also use a wide variety of mediums including water colours, oil paints and pastels."
Platform One Gallery is open Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 11am to 4pm. The exhibition runs until May 27 and admission is free.
