TWO of Hebden Bridge's most popular places were renamed in a special ceremony at the weekend.
St Pol Square and Warstein squares were unveiled as the new names for Bridge Gate car park and Hebden Bridge Marina in the event attended by outgoing Hebden Royd Mayor, Nader Fekri, members of the town twinning committee as well as members of the public.
The two names were chosen by Hebden Bridge's twin towns in France and Germany.
The car park has been renamed in honour of Saint Pol in the Arras region of France and the marina has been renamed in honour of a German town in North Rhine-Westphalia.
Councillor Fekri made a speech in English, French and German to make the visitors feel welcome.
He said: "It seemed quite difficult as I only have a French, O-Level and pub German, but it seemed to go down well. Our guests appreciated the heartfelt sentiments.
"It has been a tremendous privilege to represent our town both in France and Germany.
"Moreover, following the Saint Pol naming a street after Hebden Bridge, I reminded them by paraphrasing the poet Rupert Brooke, that there would be a little corner of Britain, that will forever be French or German."
Everyone was also treated to music by Hebden Bridge Junior Band.
They performed the national anthem of the three countries as well as the European anthem, the Ode to Joy from Beethoven's Ninth Symphony.
