THE new mayor of Hebden Royd Town Council kick-started a year-long bid to raise £4,000 for charity with a civic service.
Susan Press, who was elected two months ago, has launched full-pelt into raising funds for her chosen charity, Overgate Hospice, with the service at the Good Shepherd, Mytholmroyd.

She was joined by a host of local dignatries including Calder Valley MP Chris McCafferty, and Deputy Mayor of Calderdale David O'Neill (Lib Dem, Todmorden) for a day's programme of readings and music that helped raise £155.

Coun Press said: "The day went very well, it was great to see friends and colleagues from all over Yorkshire and people told me they thoroughly enjoyed the programme chosen by myself and Father John Gott.

"I'm pleased to begin the collection but Sunday is only the start of my year-long bid to raise £4,000 for the charity.

"My mother and my sister both died of cancer and I wanted to do something in their memory and for a place that is close to the hearts of many local families."

Over the next 12 months Coun Press plans to undertake a variety of fund-raising activities including a sponsored midnight walk around Calderdale in September.

Several Mayor's Charity collection boxes have also been placed around the town.
