MYTHOLMROYD Chrysanthemum Society has disbanded after 74 years
But the few remaining members hope to attract more green-fingered to a new Mytholmroyd Horticultural Society.

The disbanded group is inviting anyone interested in forming a group to a meeting at St Michael’s Church hall on May 22 at 7.30pm.

For
mer secretary for 23 years Stuart Jackson, 64, said: “I am sad to see the group go after 74 years. No one grows chrysanthemums in Mytholmroyd any more, so we were relying on outside groups. But we have a lot of good flower artists and felt it would be a shame to let them go.

“We feel a horticultural society will be of interest to most people. It is something everyone can do rather than just a specialist few.”

Last year’s Chrysanthemum show was cancelled due to alterations taking place at their normal venue.

“But we also did not have enough members to run the event, said Mr Jackson. “ That is why a decision was made to disband.

“We believe a lot more people will be involved with a local general flower/ horticultural society and will fill a niche in the area. If successful we could hold an annual show in late August and September as well as meeting regularly plus having a social side with lectures.”

Mr Jackson said the former society would try and get in touch with people who had donated trophies to see if they wanted them back or if they would donate them to the new group. “We will give them the option,” he said.

He also said any monies from the former Chrysanthemum Society would be transferred to the new group.
