WRITE a poem and win a prize – that's the message to young people in local schools as they prepare to break up for the summer holidays.
The Ted Hughes national young poets' award was launched last week at the Square Chapel in Halifax by Roger McGough, the original Liverpool poet.

Organised by The Elmet Trust and Calderdale libraries, the competition is a chance for young writers to win £100 and runners-up £50 in the three age group categories: 6-10/11-14/15-18. The theme is 'Memories'.

Each age group will be judged by the poet laureate, Andrew Motion, who will announce the winners at the opening of the Ted Hughes Festival in Mytholmroyd on October 22. Closing date for entries is September 19.

"This is a really exciting opportunity for young people to show how creative they can be using poetry, and it is wonderful that the winners of this national event are going to be announced here in Mytholmroyd," said Anna Turner of the Elmet Trust.

"It would be lovely if local poets were among the winners."

Entry forms can be found at local libraries, at schools or by contacting anna.turner@calderdale.gov.uk
