IT was a family affair when Crossroads welcomed 22 bowlers for the Hebden Royd League's annual mixed pairs event.
Hargreaves Ltd of Keighley, supplier of bowls and accessories, again provided the sponsorship on a day when, after some fine bowling, Colin and Winnie Wortley lined up against Andy and Jillian Johnson in the final.

The Wortleys won through three rounds, each by a 15-8 scoreline – on their way to the final while the Johnsons had an extra game to play after being drawn in the preliminary round.

Not that it mattered as they won both their opening games 21-3, the quarter-final 15-7 and the semi 15-6.

It was fine form that they carried on in the final when they raced into a 13-2 lead before the Wortleys halted their progress with a three at the tenth end.

Alas it was not to be the start of a sustained fightback as Andy and Jillian closed out the game 15-6, which meant that they had conceded just 25 points throughout their five games.

Veterans

League fixtures were replaced by the second individual competition of the season when 18 competitors vied for the Veterans Merit final at Mytholmroyd WM.

The eventual finalists Trevor Hargreaves and Peter Copley had both avoided the preliminary round and then passed through the quarter-finals with 21-19 wins.

In the semis Crossroads’ Hargreaves was again pushed close before beating Brian Gunnill 21-19 while Copley got the better of Mytholmroyd bowler David Warburton, 21-14.

In the final Copley started off with a single but found himself trailing 12-5 by the 12th end.

Hargreaves steadily increased his advantage to 17-7 with a collection of singles but Copley responded with seven chalks against one and closed the gap to 18-14.

Hargreaves settled any nerves with a pair and ran out the 21-14 winner.
