RATHER than risk the rigours of a trip to Latvia or Albania to celebrate his 21st birthday, Charles Bamford had a better idea.
The other Friday was designated King Charles Day t Skip and with the support and best wishes of his family and friends, plus the assistance of the weather, Charles certainly had a day to remember.

Not so long ago news of a heavy police presence at
Hebden Bridge Golf Club would have only one explanation - Geoff Holmes is on the pies again. But as club captain this year Geoff has accepted a challenge from the Humberside constabulary as the curtain raiser.

Their captain, Shaun Leach, explained: Somebody posted an item on the internet that Geoff Holmes had been voted the most improved golfer in the universe, we thought he might be a soft touch if his handicap had come down too.

“We got a nasty shock and have lost the match 5-1, but it is great to renew our friendships in Hebden Bridge and we certainly wanted to wish Charles well.”

No chance of any such bonhomie from the Skip boys once they get wind of a good pay day from the prizes. Hours had gone into searching to find a partner just coming into his best form.

Martin Talbot chose the pro David Astin but could managed only 41 points, the same as Lenny Webster, partnering George Bamford, and one better than Darren Williams and Jake Allott.

From the early starters Dave Fisher and Andy Hutchinson’s 45 points would take some beating - not that the rest of the field were to know as tight security to keep the scores secret heightened the excitement.

Andy had done all the scoring on the back nine, possibly Fisher had used the beer buggy too much by then but it was hard not to with two of Charlies Angels - Rebecca and Stellata - serving the Becks and Stella all day.

Only Chris Davison and Matt Lamper’s 42 points came closer until Dobby and Longbottom made their final pit-stop with only three holes to play.

Shuffler Dobby breached the tight security surrounding the score to beat and reasoned that if they could score seven points over the mountains they would take first prize.

And it would have worked, except that Dobby’s putter let him down on the final green when a 12-foot putt was needed. Of course the putter in question, one Andrew Longbottom, would never agree but his claims that he was given the wrong line were soon lost among other hard luck stories.
