HEBDEN Bridge's usual curtain-raiser to the new Calderdale Chess League season, the annual Lightning Trophy competition, took place at the Trades Club, Holme Street on Monday evening.
In this type of chess players must move on a buzzer every 10 seconds – leading to lots of crazy blunders, and, in fact, none of the games all evening were drawn.

The reigning champion, Dave Wedge, steadily pulled ahead of the field, strongly challenged by his two sons, Thomas and Matthew, and by B team Captain Martin Syrett, but in the end, he emerged a clear winner on 6/6, with his four nearest rivals – Thomas, Martin, Dave Shapland and Chris Edwards – all finishing on 4/6.

Club secretary, John Kerrane, commented, "You cannot take this type of chess too seriously. Everyone had a good time, and it is a fun way to start the season, before the serious business starts on the 15th."
