SOWERBY came out all guns blazing in this the final of the Calderdale League Cup and caught Saints sleeping from a quickly taken free kick which yielded their first goal.

But after Saints had weathered the opening 15 minutes they started to get into the game with both Ryan Roberts and Jake Grannan seeing their shots on goal saved by the goalkeeper.

Joseph Elwin's pace took him past defenders and he put a ball through for Roberts to score his first goal with second coming from a nicely timed pass from Cieran Taylor.

Sowerby counterattacked and almost scored but Saints somehow managed to scramble the ball off the line and goalkeeper, Richard Roberts, managed to save the returning goal bound shot.

Jay Glover sprinting from defence received a crossed ball and hammered it into the back of the net.

Whilst Jack Crabtree and Josh Highley battled away in midfield, Saints defence prevented several attacks from developing with Jared Brooks, Sam Rowntree and Nick Murphy chasing down anything in their area. Tom Barclay was heroic as time after time he turned up in the danger areas and kept Sowerby's strikers quiet.

Roberts scored his hat trick but Sowerby immediately pounced back with a goal from a through ball which opened up Saints defence and kept them in the game.

Seb Holmes nearly scored for Saints as the ball just clipped the top of the bar. As Roberts scored his fourth Jas Duncan helped to keep the pressure on Sowerby which saw Elwin crossing the ball to Taylor to fire in goal number six. Despite that Sowerby attacked to the bitter end and Roberts had to make a couple of saves to keep them at bay.

- Hebden Royd Red Star missed out on a historic treble when they went down 5-1 to Ovenden West Riding in the Halifax FA Saturday Cup at Elland last Wednesday night. Dan Earle got Star's goal from the penalty spot.
