HEBDEN Royd Red Star made it a nap hand of wins to edge past Stainland and soar to the top of the Halifax Ziggy's Spice House League premier division last Saturday.
With Greetland going down 1-0 at home to Elland, Star beat Stainland thanks to goals from Adam Watts and Bob Day.
It was the start of a productive weekend for the veteran Watts who proved that class in front of goal is permanent - he added another two goals for his Sunday side Shoulder Royd, who are breathing down leaders Stirk Bridge's next in that league's first division.
Both Red Star's goals came in the opening 20 minutes playing down the slope, Watts first on the scoresheet from a free header at the back post from a Lee Thompson cross.
Day made it two from a rebound after Stainland goalkeeper Darren Robinson had saved from Ger Porter.
It stayed that way past half time, Stainland pulling a goal back through defender Gavin Coffey's long range thunderbolt and although Stainland pressed hard on their home turf Star's defence held firm to secure the points.
Luddenden Foot leapfrogged valley rivals Midgley United in the premier division derby of the day and now lie third. With Midgley in fourth spot, all three valley top flight teams can be reasonably pleased with their start to the campaign.
Calder 76 have been in excellent form in the first division but they had a bad day at the office last weekend when they went down 3-1 away at a Salem side who have struggled so far this season. Not on this occasion, Stone's strike Calder's sole reply to goals from Manley, L. Huson and B. Huson.
Red Star Reserves' game against Stump Cross was off as Stump failed to raise a side for the fixture.
Into division three and Calder's second string had a day to forget in the top v bottom clash at Brearley Fields. The match went with form unfortunately, leaders AFC Crossleys winning the match 11-0.
Luddenden Foot Reserves secured their place in the leading pack with a thumping 9-3 win over Sowerby United Reserves which brought hat-tricks for Cartwright and Wilson and Keegan, Gladwyn and Lymm also making the scoresheet.
Midgley Reserves and Wadsworth United both went down to defeat, Midgley by the odd goal in five, their two strikes coming from Balmforth.
Wadsworth were playing high-flying Volunteer Arms and made a real fight of it, Bell scoring as they were just edged out of something from the match, 2-1.
