HEBDEN Royd Red Star started the defence of their Halifax Ziggy's Spice House League Premier Division title in style with a 5-1 win over Shelf United on Friday night.
In a repeat of last season’s Challenge Cup final two goals from Ryan Thomas and one each from Ben Norman, Dan Earle and Damion Lord did the damage.

Midgley United spoiled Luddenden Foot’s top flight debut by winning 4-2. Andy Bottomley with three and Rick Weber did the damage for United while Dave Maguire got both goals for Foot.

Promoted Hebden Royd Red Star Reserves got off to a flying start thanks to a 3-2 win at Stump Cross in Division one.

Luddenden Foot Reserves are newcomers to Division three this season and they made a good start with a 3-2 victory at Wadsworth United.

Mlodeski, Smith and Maguire were their goalscorers while Geall and Masak replied for United.

McAlpine, Greenwood, Gomersall and Redhead found the target as Midgley United Reserves won 4-1 against their Denholme United counterparts.

Calder 76 Reserves lost out by the odd goal in seven.

l There was no joy for the local sides in the first round of Halifax sunday League fixtures.

Hollins Holme were on the wrong end of a 6-0 scoreline against Spring Gardens in the Premier Division.

Shoulder Royd lost 5-3 at Ovenden Amateurs in Division one while Stubbing Wharf lost 4-2 at Jacks Bar Reserves.
