CALDER Valley ladies successfully clinched first place in both the English and British fell running Championship for 2008 at the final race at Dufton near Appleby.
Over the five mile course in the former county of Westmorland, Sally Newman finished in fourth place in a time of 37.22, her medal haul for the season is gold in both the English Ladies Veteran 40 and 45 year old classes, silver in the British Lady
Veteran 40 class and bronze in the English Senior Ladies.
Helen Fines came in 11th place in 39.20 which gives her the silver medal place in the English championships for her seasons efforts.
Gail Tombs,despite being hampered by injury,managed to complete the course,which assures her of a silver medal in the English Lady veterans over 55 class.
In the team event the counters were Newman,Fines,Anne Johnson,Gayle Sugden and Jo.Waites who unluckily had to retire from this race after spraining her ankle but has contributed greatly throughout the season,her efforts earning her an England place.
For the men,Ben Mounsey finished in 14th spot in 31.20.Shaun Godsman,16th position in 31.32 and Alex Whittem clocked 32.42 and 30th position.
Other Calder finishers were Sharon Godsman 43.08,Thirza Hyde 46.31
Bill Johnson 35.49,Jonathan Moore 35.52,Dave Austin 38.12,Rob Sharratt 38.32,Darren Sugden 44.32 and Dave Beston 45.04
The FRA awards dinner will be held in Kendal in November.
l Also held on the same day was the Blackshawhead Fete fell race in which eleven other Calder Valley runners competed in. A 5.5 mile route taking in sections of the Pennine Way
Calder finishers in this one were: 7th , 44.17 Simon Bourne; 15th, 45.58 Dave Beels; 19th, 46.47 Jon Underwood; 23rd, 47.11 Stephen Grimley; 27th, 48.02 Rob Rawlinson; 33rd, 50.25 Martin Whitehead; 36th, 50.55 Tim Brooks; 39th, 51.02 Helen Lambert; 40th, 51.48 Dave Culpan; 41st, 52.23 Charlie Boyce.
The race winner was Greg Elwell of Halifax Harriers in 43.04.
