CALDER Valley men set about their annual attempt to prize victory in the local Shepherds Skyline fell race from nine times winner Ian Holmes who runs for Bingley in fine style at the weekend, turning out their biggest contingent of runners ever.
The race, which is organised by Todmorden Harriers, starts and finishes from the Shepherd's Rest pub and is a testing six mile route around Stoodley Pike.
This year the race was made tougher than usual as the ground underfoot was extremely boggy suffering as it had from both high levels of rain fall and high levels of cows. This year also saw more runners taking part than usual with a total of 363 setting.
The importance of getting a good start was highlighted by this as within a matter of yards the track narrows to almost single file yet somehow manages to accommodate runners 4 or 5 wide jockeying for any piece of decent ground to run on.
Thirty eight Calder men took part and despite leading the race for the early part Ben Mounsey could not manage to prevent Holmes making it 10 wins this year as he finished the race in 42.31mins.
Ben hung on for 2nd in 43.15 and was able to hold off clubmate Karl Gray who had to settle for 3rd place this year in 43.48 having previously been runner up on more than one occasion. Further successful runs for Calder Valley from Alex Whittem and Adam Breaks who were 6th and 7th respectively enable Calder Valley to easily claim the team prize. Jason Stevens also completed the course inside the top 20.
The race was the penultimate in Calder Valley's own club championship and with relative positions translating into points there were some fine races within the race taking place not least between Bill Johnson and Steve Smithies who have been vying for the right to be the club's champion older runner, on this occasion Bill prevailed by a mere six seconds which edges him closer to taking the title form Steve with just one race to go in the championship.
In the ladies' race Calder Valley's Jo Waites set about continuing her own dominance of this race by taking her fourth win in a row and claiming 47th place overall to boot. Jo was ably backed up by her clubmate Anne Johnson who was second as well as winning the ladies vets and with clubmate Jackie Scarfe the ladies were also able to claim the team .prize.
Other Calder Runners were: 33rd Chris Mawdsley, 38th Simon Bourne, 41st Andy Fleet, 45th Mark Goldie, 48th James Williams, 49th Rob Sharratt, 50th Steve Hunter, 63rd Graham Hill, 86th Paul Biddulph, 88th Lee Shimwell, 94th Rob Rawlinson, 95th Alex Cornish, 122nd Nick Murphy, 139 Tim Brooks, 141st Carl Greenwood, 142nd Tim Hayles, 152nd Allan Greenwood, 157th Keelan Serjeant, 165th Martin Huddleston, 168th Mike Wardle, 178th Graham Lloyd, 188th Stephen Grimley, 199th Clare Kenny, 200th Stewart Gardner, 201st Darren Sugden, 209th Craig Worley, 211th Claire Hansen, 212th Jez Wilkinson, 214th Martin Whitehead, 216th Linda Crabtree, 218th Jo Porter, 238th Alastair Whitelaw, 244th John Nunn, 256th Dave Culpan, 298th Mick Banks and 301st Gail Tombs.
