THREE hens led the way home in the latest Luddenden Foot Homing Society young bird race from Hullavington last Saturday.
Cloudy conditions meant that the 160 birds sent by 12 members were not released until sunnier conditions prevailed at 11.30am.

Tommy Boland and Robert Brown won their ninth race of the season from the 20 held so far when a hen reached Wheatley jus
t before 14 minutes past two having flown 153 miles in a southerly wind with a touch of east in it.

She was well fancied to win the race and took all the pools, nom and pontoon prizes totalling £53. Two-and-a-half minutes later Terry Divers’s hen, which had previously been second at the first Worcester race, was timed to give Terry his third runners-up position in the last four races.

The week before Terry won the club’s squeaker draw and this week he won first prize of £40 in the produce competition with the pigeon in fifth place.

That elusive win surely cannot be far away. Steve and Mark Smith were third beating Kevin Brearley into fourth place by a couple of minutes.

Saturday’s race is from Wincanton.

Hullavington result: 1 Boland & Brown 1641; 2 T Divers 1616; 3 S & M Smith 1604; 4 K Brearley 1586; 5 T Divers 1577; 6 Mr & Mrs Shepherd 1561; 7 S&M Smith 1553; 8 SD Brearley 1536; 9 Mr & Mrs Shepherd 1531.8; 10 W Lawson 1531.5; 11 Mr & Mrs Shepherd 1529; 12 W Lawson 1525; 13 Mr & Mrs Shepherd 1522; 14 G Radley 1518; 15 Grogan & Lumb 1509.
